I am certain they will have a large fireworks display on the river or Lake Michigan. Many people from y home town go up there since it is only 55 miles away.
There is no lack of things to do in Chicago but it will be very expensive. If your family lives in Chicago itself, I am sure they will have a much better idea than I do. You may find a community calendar of event on the Internet by searching for ” Chicago community calendar of events, July 2007″

Fireworks are July 3rd at dusk.
Taste of Chicago will be in full swing on the 4th of July - not a place to go if you do not like crowds, but otherwise, excellent cheesecake and pizza. Free concert by John Mayer that day
Art Institute is a great place to go - it will be right on the edge of Taste, so a good place to go to take a break and walk off some calories. Field Museum has exhibits on Darwin and Dinosaurs that day. Oh - If you have not been to Millenium Park, you are missing out! The Bean is awesome!
Cubs are out of town, but the Sox play Baltimore at 6:05 and have fireworks after the game.
Lincoln Park Zoo is free (as always). If you don’t mind crowds, you can always head to Navy Pier for a couple hours - rent bikes, go for a sightseeing cruise, do the Ferris Wheel… Hope this helps - if you have something more in mind (indoor vs. outdoor - Northside/Southside/Downtown) I could probably list some more suggestions.
