having too much fun asked:

What kinds of traditions do you and your family have? Fireworks, large family gathering, bar-b-que, sparklers at home for the kids?

My family are English. So they don’t see July 4th in quite as positive a way as we (Americans) do :-)
Personally, I plan on going 4-wheeling to a part of Arizona that doesn’t get many visitors - about 1,000 square miles, 20 steers, 50 horses & 5 people, and hawks & eagles soaring on the wind - beautiful.

Fortunately that’s at higher altitude, because Phoenix has a forecast of 117F for the 4th & that’s toasty warm, even for the locals.

My daughter’s birthday is the 2nd. She thought for years that everyone put off fireworks because it was HER birthday. She came home from school crying because the teacher told her that we celebrate AMERICA’S birthday. She wanted to know who she was. We usually celebrate her birthday on the 4th. Sometimes at the beach, sometimes with her friends, sometimes with family. We always set off fireworks and have a picnic. The main thing is that we are together!

    Food, fun, fireworks….

We have a big family gathering at my parents house… They are the only ones in the family that have a house outside of city limits (where fireworks are prohibited). So everyone comes to their house and we have a big BBQ, people bring lots of different foods…. We drink lots of BEER…. Hopefully it will be hot out and we’ll do things like set-up the kiddie pools during the day, have water balloon fights sometimes…. things like that… Play yard games like smashminton, etc….

Then at night we all sit out on blankets and lawn chairs on the front yard and watch the fireworks display out in the street. It’s very unprofessional and a sorry excuse for a fireworks display… but it’s family and it’s kinda fun watching the idiots that still insist that holding a roman candle in their HAND is the way to have a safe and sane celebratoin.

I just sit back and relax….. With a beer in one hand and a bucket of water in the other………

A happy and safe 4th to you and yours!

Usually my husband, daughter and I, my brother, my mom, dad, grandma, aunt, uncle, and my two cousins all get together at my parent’s house. Everyone brings food, soda, beer and fireworks (great combo, dontcha think?) and we all just have a great time. This year, however, my brother is in Iraq, my husband has to work, and my parents are building a new house, so we’re all getting together at our place this year. I think that we’re going to start a new tradition - we have a big wading pool, so the plan is to sit in that and have a drink while watching the neighbor’s fireworks (after we’ve shot all of ours off that is). Best of all, it’s America’s birthday, and a time to honor all of those who have sacrificed so much to give us the Freedom that we so cherish, and on top of all, to thank God for blessing us in this wonderful country!

I’m an American living overseas. We get together with about 12 other American families and play a game of baseball then have a cookout. The kids love it & they don’t have to miss out on a very important holiday pertinent to their heritage. We all bring our iPods with music like John Cougar Mellencamp, The Blues Brothers, Tom Petty, The Steve Miller Band… it’s something we look forward to all spring.
    We celebrate Thanksgiving together too.
