Yes, but it was pretty high up. There wasn’t too much to see, crossing over the country at a high altitude. There are flight restrictions on airplanes, height requirements, and special restrictions concerning July 4th. You used to see small planes circling around an area again and again, while the fireworks were going off. Now, after 9/11 the FAA is probably much more serious about enforcing restrictions.

Yes, although you can see the displays the fireworks do not go as high as you might think. The display is much more spectacular viewed from the ground in close proximity to the display. The sound of course makes it much more enjoyable also. Now, meteor showers and arouraborialis! that’s another thing all together!

As a pilot, I have been both on commercial and small airplanes on the 4th as well as New Year’s eve.
The fireworks, although they seem to go very high when seen from ground level, are only a few hundred feet up in the air. The airplane is usually flying at several thousand feet, therefore the fireworks look tiny and far away.
The contrast is also lost. When seen against a black sky you get an impressive show, but from the air they are lost against ground lights and city clutter.
Enjoy your show from the ground, you are not missing anything by not being airborne!

Marce X has it right. I’ve never been up on July 4, but I’ve been up at 4-5,000 feet near areas where fireworks are being shot off. The fireworks don’t rise very high, and most of the brilliance is lost against the lighted ground.

I suppose that if they were being shot off in a completely dark area, they’d look better, but fireworks displays are usually over cities, not out in the middle of nowhere.

In a small plane they’re not that interesting. They’re meant to be viewed from the ground, not from the air. You’re also restricted on how close you can get.

It’s just not all that you think it is.

I have rented a Cessna to go up and see the fireworks from all over town at the same time. It does look pretty cool, but the view isn’t from above, it’s pretty much the same level ot slightly below.

Fireworks usually explode less than 1,000 feet in the air, and aircraft must be at least that altitude above populated areas, so your view is level with the display. The best part is that you can see every show in a 80 miles radius on a clear night and there is no traffic to fight to get home.
